Article 6: Acceptance of Massachusetts General Law Chapter 59 Section 5, Clause 17E
Accepting this local option would allow the state to increase the annual asset limits to qualify for any clause 17 tax exemptions. This exemption allows a $175 credit toward the qualifying applicant’s annual real estate taxes, and can be beneficial to some senior citizens, surviving spouses and surviving minors. To earn this exemption a senior, surviving spouse or surviving minor of a deceased parent must meet specific ownership, occupancy and asset requirements. Acceptance of the local option would only affect the asset requirement.
