DPH issues public health advisory on recalled Nara Organics infant formula products

Recalled Nara Organics infant formula products, including 700g and 400g cans and the bottom of a can showing where to find the lot number.

The Massachusetts Department of Public Health (DPH) has released an alert for parents, caregivers, clinicians, retailers, and local health departments of a nationwide recall of all lots of Nara Organics powdered infant formula. Nara Organics voluntarily recalled its products on June 13, 2026 due to a possible risk of Clostridium botulinum contamination.

Nara Organics Whole Milk Infant Formula was sold at Target stores, Target.com, and Nara.com from July 2025 to June 2026. Consumers may still have these products in their homes. Recalled products should not be used, sold, donated, distributed, or purchased.

What is infant botulism?
Infant botulism occurs when spores from the bacteria Clostridium botulinum are swallowed and begin to grow in an infant’s intestinal tract. The bacteria produce toxins that affect the nervous system and can cause severe illness.

Symptoms can appear slowly and may develop several weeks after an infant drinks the formula.

Infants with botulism may show:

  • Hard or no bowel movements (constipation)
  • Poor feeding/Not eating well
  • Trouble swallowing
  • Weak or different sounding cry
  • Droopy eyelids
  • Loss of head control/Unable to hold head up
  • Trouble breathing
  • Respiratory arrest (stopping breathing)

If an infant shows any of these symptoms, parents or caregivers should seek emergency medical care immediately.
Infant botulism is diagnosed by a healthcare provider.

Recommended action steps for parents and caregivers

  • Monitor infants who consumed Nara Organics infant formula and seek medical care immediately if signs or symptoms of infant botulism develop.
  • Do not use recalled Nara Organics formula. Thoroughly wash and sanitize bottles and kitchenware that came into contact with the formula.
  • Throw away or return any unopened containers of Nara Organics formula.
  • Save any opened containers of any Nara Organics formula, record the lot information, and label it “DO NOT USE.”  After 30 days, if no symptoms have developed, discard the product unless otherwise directed by DPH.
  • Follow safe infant formula preparation and storage steps from CDC: Infant Formula Preparation and Storage.

Information for retailers
Retailers must ensure:

  • All recalled Nara Organics formula products are removed from shelves.
  • Returned Nara Organics formula products are also removed from inventory and not resold.
  • Staff are informed about the recall and instructed not to restock affected products.
  • Wash and sanitize items and surfaces that may have touched the recalled formula.

Local health departments may conduct recall effectiveness checks and report findings to the DPH Division of Food Protection (617) 983-6712.

Information for clinicians
Report all suspected cases immediately to DPH by calling 617-983-6800 (24/7) and speaking to the epidemiologist on call.  If consultation supports the diagnosis of infant botulism, DPH will assist in obtaining botulism immunoglobulin (BabyBIG) treatment from the California Infant Botulism Treatment and Prevention Program.

Water Conservation Notice

North Andover has been experiencing below normal rainfall and the State of Massachusetts has issued a Critical Drought Alert for the Northeast Region.  We are asking that residents voluntarily conserve water by reducing all non-essential water use, including limiting outdoor lawn watering to no more than 2 days per week and not watering lawns between the hours of 7am to 7pm.  In effort to keep the Lake level from dropping further, this notice will stay in effect until weather conditions significantly change or mandatory restrictions are warranted.
