Trustees staff, along with partners at Star Tree Wildfire Protection LLC, Massachusetts DCR Bureau of Forest Fire Control and Forestry, and North Andover Fire Department will conduct a prescribed fire at Weir Hill and Ward Reservation.
Weir Hill will be closed Friday evening into Saturday (11/10 – 11/11) and will be re-opened on Sunday (11/12).
Ward Reservation will be open but burn section near Boston Hill will be closed on Sunday (11/12).
A prescribed burn is the controlled application of fire to the land to accomplish specific conservation and land management goals. Weir Hill and Boston Hill at Ward have burned regularly for centuries, and the property’s woodlands and shrublands contain many rare species of plants and animals adapted to and dependent upon frequent fire. In applying prescribed fire, this partnership will reduce fuel loads and the risk of wildfire, provide training for firefighters, and perpetuate these rare natural communities and the associated biodiversity and rare species populations they support.
