Reduction of Single-Use Plastic Checkout Bags

Reduction of Single-Use Plastic Checkout Bags
October 19, 2023
Dear Food Establishment:
On May 16, 2023 the Town of North Andover held its annual town meeting and at this meeting, the North Andover Citizens for Sustainable Living (NACSL) submitted a citizen petition for action by the voters of the Town of North Andover. This citizen petition proposed a reduction of single use, disposable plastic bags in North Andover. This petition was passed by a majority vote and will take effect on January 1, 2024.

The Article requires any food establishment over 3,000 square feet of finished floor area to eliminate the use of single use, disposable plastic bags and provide a recyclable checkout bag to customers. The bag shall comply with the requirements of Article 14 (included) and be either a recyclable paper checkout bag or a reusable checkout bag Please refer to Article 14 for more specific information and the included definitions.

The NACSL has some reusable bags which are available for smaller businesses that are impacted and that would like to give them to some customers. fI you would like some of these bags, please send an email to nandovercs|@gmail.com by November 6, 2023 with the following information:
1 Name of Business;
2. Contact name and phone number (or email address);
3. Number of bags requested.
Once the requests are received, NACSL will assess the number of requests vs. the number of available bags and will let the businesses know how many can be provided.
Sincerely,
Brian J.LaGrasse
North Andover Director of Public Health
