Recycling Delay

Please be advised that due to a work stoppage/labor issue with the Town’s recycling processing vendor, Republic Services, we are expecting some delays with recycling pickup.  This is specific to recycling, however volume increases and longer lines may also impact curbside trash pickup.  Arrangements are being made for an alternative processing site and we are hopeful that delays will be at a minimum.  As a reminder, curbside pickup is operating on the Holiday schedule this week.

– ICYMI Spotted Lanternfly
The Mass. Dept. of Agricultural Resources (MDAR) recently confirmed an infestation of the invasive insect known as spotted lanternfly (Lycorma delicatula or “SLF”) in North Andover.   Lanternfly eggs started to hatch a few weeks ago and the nymphs are now active. These nymphs are small black insects with white spots.

MDAR is requesting that the public report any sightings of this pest, so that they can track its spread.

North Andover Newsbrief, Week of June 23, 2025

– Heat Advisory

Following the extreme heat alert issued by The Massachusetts Bureau of Climate and Environmental Health, North Andover is issuing an extreme heat advisory to be in effect through Wednesday, June 26.

Temperatures during this time are forecasted to exceed the Unhealthy Heat Threshold (85oF or above for three or more days. Sustained high temperatures can lead to adverse health outcomes, especially for vulnerable populations like children, older adults, and those with chronic medical conditions.

In Massachusetts, extreme heat is becoming a more serious health concern as summer temperatures rise year after year. Data show that the first heat wave of the season is often the worst for people’s health, leading to more heat-related illnesses and hospital visits than later heat waves.

While this heat advisory remains in effect, we encourage residents to take the following steps to prevent heat related illness:

  • Limit Outdoor Activities: Avoid strenuous activities during peak heat hours (typically 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.).

  • Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water throughout the day.

  • Seek Air-Conditioned Environments: Spend time in air-conditioned places like libraries, malls, or community centers.

  • Check on Vulnerable Individuals: Regularly check on elderly neighbors, young children, and those with health conditions.

Find additional resources to stay safe during extreme heat.

– What Not to Flush

Even if they’re small, even if the package says “flushable,” some everyday items can cause messy and expensive problems for your plumbing and our sewer treatment facilities.

Products that might seem safe to flush down the toilet, such as personal care wipes, dental floss and paper towels, don’t dissolve quickly – or at all – in water. If a scrap of undissolved material gets caught on a nick, bend or bump within a pipe, it can trigger a growth of buildup that could cause a sewer backup in your home or neighborhood.

Sewer agencies, environmentalists and consumer advocates are working with manufacturers to correct product labeling. In the meantime, please make sure to dispose of personal care products, cleaning supplies and other household waste properly: in the trash can, in the recycling bin or at your local household hazardous waste disposal site.
